California Balboa Classic Competitions

Pass

All competitors must have a Full Weekend Pass or a Balboa Crash Course Pass.  Each Mixed Couples participant must register separately.  For Couples Contests only one participant should register and list their partner’s name.

Rules

All competitors must read general rules and descriptions for each competition.

Competition Fees

Couple Competitions:
$35/couple ($45 at the door)

Mixed Couples:
$20/competitor ($25 at the door)


Competitor’s Rules and Expectations

  • Each competitor must have either a full weekend pass, balboa crash course pass, or an invitational track pass to enter competitions
  • Each competitor must be present at the competitor’s meeting and must check in with the contest coordinator 10 minutes before the prelims and finals, otherwise they may be scratched without a refund
  • Competitors are expected to behave with courteous and professional behavior at all times during the California Balboa Classic.
  • Competitors are expected to read the “Competitor’s Rules and Expectations” and the “Competition Descriptions”
  • All competitions are in Balboa, Bal-Swing and/or LA Swing unless otherwise specified.
  • Each competitor must agree to the liability waiver
  • A couple consists of one lead & one follow
  • Amateur Definition: Amateur dancers do not teach Balboa regularly and have not placed in the top 3 placements in any Balboa competition at a major Balboa event or in a national level Balboa competition. Dancers who have made the finals in major Balboa competitions are encouraged to compete in the Open division. If you have placed in the top 3 placements in a major Balboa contest as an Amateur competitor you are encouraged to compete in the Open division.

Competition Descriptions

Amateur Mixed Couples

Open to Amateur Balboa dancers
  • Amateur Definition:  Amateur dancers do not teach Balboa regularly and have not placed in the top 3 placements in any Balboa competition at a major Balboa event or in a national level Balboa competition (ie: California Balboa Classic, Camp Hollywood, All Balboa Weekend, ILHC, Music City Shuffle, Northwest Balboa Fest, etc).  Dancers who have made the finals in major Balboa competitions are encouraged to compete in the Open division.  If you have placed in the top 3 placements in a major Balboa contest as an Amateur competitor  you are encouraged to compete in the Open division.
  • Competitors will sign up individually as a lead or follow and will randomly draw partners for each round of this competition.
  • Format To Be Determined!

Open Mixed Couples

Open to any age or skill level of dancer.
  • Competitors will sign up individually as a lead or follow and will randomly draw partners for each round of this competition.
  • Prelims will be danced in heats, with competitors changing partners a minimum of three times.
  • Finalists will draw a partner and they will be judged as a couple for the entire final round.
  • Finalists will dance a warm-up all skate and will dance in spotlights to DJed music. Couples may dance further all skates as deemed necessary by the judges.
Prizes include:

$600 Cash divided between 1st-3rd places, Vendor Room Vouchers and Trophies

Pure Balboa Classic

Open to couples of any skill level.
  • Prelims: Couples will dance in heats to a minimum of three songs of three different tempos.
  • Finals: Finalists will dance dual spotlights to DJed music and will be judged by relative placement.
  • Pure Balboa Judging Criteria: Judges will use their personal discretion in looking for couples dancing in the nature of original Pure Balboa.
  • The “nature” of Pure Balboa includes but is not limited to: Emphasis on partnership, intricate and subtle footwork and texture, upper body fluidity, etc.
Prizes include:

$1000 Cash divided between 1st-3rd places, Vendor Room Vouchers and Trophies

Amateur Classic

Open to couples of amateur skill level.
  • Amateur Definition: Amateur dancers do not teach Balboa regularly and have not placed in the top 3 placements in any Balboa competition at a major Balboa event or in a national level Balboa competition (ie: California Balboa Classic, Camp Hollywood, All Balboa Weekend, ILHC, Music City Shuffle, Northwest Balboa Fest, etc). Dancers who have made the finals in major Balboa competitions are encouraged to compete in the Open division. If you have placed in the top 3 placements in a major Balboa contest as an Amateur competitor you are encouraged to compete in the Open division.
  • This Balboa & Bal-Swing competition is designed to showcase the intricacies of partnering and musicality, as well as the excitement and energy of Bal-Swing and LA Swing.
  • Prelims: Couples will dance in heats to a minimum of three songs of three different tempos.
  • Finals:  Finalists will dance to DJed music. They will dance one all skate warm up song and do a dual spotlight round to showcase diverse skill, partnering and musicality.
  • Warm Up: Couples will dance to DJed music. approx. 210 bpm
  • Duels: Couples will dance in duel spotlights to DJed music. approx. 240 bpm
  • Final: All skate to DJed music. Approx. 250 bpm

The Classic

Open to couples of any skill level.
  • This Balboa & Bal-Swing competition is designed to showcase the intricacies of partnering and musicality in the mid-tempo round as well as the excitement and energy of Bal-Swing and LA Swing in the fast round.
  • Prelims: Couples will dance in heats to a minimum of three songs of three different tempos.
  • Finals: Finalists will dance two rounds to live music. They will dance one medium round and one fast round to showcase diverse skill, partnering and musicality.
  • Medium Round: Couples will dance spotlights to live music. approx. 230 bpm
  • Fast Round: Couples will dance phrased dual spotlights to live music. approx. 260-270 bpm
Prizes include:

$1000 Cash divided between 1st-3rd places, Vendor Room Vouchers and Trophies

Invitational Mixed Couples

Open to individuals by invitation only.
  • Competitors will go straight to finals. They will randomly draw a partner and they will be judged as a couple. Competitors will dance a warm-up all skate. Each couple will dance a DJ’d spotlight.
  • Competitors will judge themselves and must rank themselves and their partner in last.
Prizes include:

Street Credit, Cash Prize for First Place and Trophies
